Local-first by design.
This page explains what Phexotial stores, what external services may receive, and what remains under your control.
Effective date: July 16, 2026
The Short Version
Phexotial does not require an account and does not maintain a server-side copy of your personal workspace. Your layouts, feeds, notes, bookmarks, tasks, reading queue, themes, and other workspace data are stored in your browser.
A first-party analytics script on phexotial.com records basic visit and engagement information locally in your browser. It is not transmitted to a remote server. The hosting provider may process standard request information as part of operating the site.
When you request a feed, use an AI provider, load external media, or contact support, the information required for that request is sent to that service.
What Stays in Your Browser
Phexotial stores workspace data locally using IndexedDB and localStorage. This includes:
- Workspace layout and module configuration
- Saved items, bookmarks, and reading queue
- Notes, projects, and tasks
- Feed cache and feed activity
- Themes, wallpaper, and personalization preferences
- Focus session records
- API keys (stored in IndexedDB, not included in backup exports)
Phexotial does not automatically upload this workspace data to a Phexotial account or central user database.
Website and Extension Separation
The Phexotial website and browser extension use separate browser storage areas because they run under different origins. They do not automatically share a workspace. Export and import can be used to transfer supported data.
Custom Orbit Video Wallpaper (Extension Only)
The Custom Orbit feature, available exclusively in the browser extension, allows you to import a local MP4 or WebM video file as a personal animated wallpaper. The video file is stored as a Blob in your browser's IndexedDB. It is never uploaded, transmitted, or sent to any server. No network request is made with the video content.
Custom Orbit videos are excluded from backup exports to keep backup files manageable. Only metadata (file name, dimensions, duration, size) is included in backups. The video itself remains only in the browser where it was imported. Removing a Custom Orbit video deletes the Blob from IndexedDB immediately.
No additional browser permissions are required for Custom Orbit. It uses
the existing storage permission (IndexedDB) already granted
by the extension.
What May Leave Your Browser
Site Visits
The phexotial.com website includes a first-party analytics script (Zya Imprint) that records page paths, engagement metrics (scroll depth, clicks, time on page), device characteristics, and performance data. This information is stored locally in your browser and is not transmitted to a remote server. The script respects Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals.
The hosting provider (Neocities) may process standard request information — such as IP address, browser type, requested page, and timestamp — as part of operating and securing the site.
Feed Requests
Loading feeds sends the feed URL and normal request metadata to the originating feed server or through a configured feed gateway. Feed providers and gateway infrastructure process those requests under their own practices.
AI Providers
When you choose an external AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, or a local Ollama instance), the text you submit for processing is sent to that provider using the API key and configuration you supply. Ollama requests remain local to the configured machine or network.
External Links and Media
Opening external websites or loading remote media may reveal normal request information to those services.
Support Email
If you email support, the operator receives your email address, message contents, and any attachments you intentionally send.
Browser Extension
The Phexotial extension replaces the browser's new-tab page and stores workspace data locally in the extension's browser storage. It uses these permissions:
| Permission | Why Phexotial Uses It |
|---|---|
activeTab |
Reads the current page title and URL only when you explicitly trigger a capture action (toolbar click, Alt+Shift+P, or context menu). No passive tab access. |
storage |
Saves small extension preferences via browser storage. |
contextMenus |
Adds optional right-click menu items for saving pages or links. |
The website may send a restricted local message to the installed extension to confirm it is present. The extension responds with basic technical information such as its version and supported capabilities. This handshake does not include your browsing history, workspace, notes, feeds, API keys, or captured pages.
The extension does not collect browsing history, inject content scripts into every page, or passively monitor tabs.
Cookies
Phexotial does not use application cookies for accounts, advertising, or behavioral profiling.
Data Control and Deletion
You can export a backup from Phexotial's Data settings. You can delete local Phexotial data through the in-app reset controls or by clearing site or extension storage in your browser. Removing the extension removes access to its local workspace and may cause the browser to delete extension-owned storage. Export a backup first if you want to preserve that data.
Clearing browser data does not delete records held by third-party providers, hosting infrastructure, or your email provider.
Third-Party Services
Third-party services process requests under their own privacy terms. Phexotial does not control how an external feed publisher, AI provider, browser store, or hosting provider handles information sent directly to it.
Children
Phexotial is a general-purpose productivity tool and is not designed to knowingly collect personal information from children.
